22nd Nov 2024

Experiment 97

Objective

To prepare a standard solution of oxalic acid at a concentration of 0.05 M (250 mL).

Introduction

Oxalic acid is a primary standard substance, which means it can be used to prepare accurate standard solutions by dissolving a specific amount in water.

Materials

Chemicals

·       Oxalic acid (99.95% purity)

·       Distilled water

Apparatus

·       250 mL flask

·       Funnel

·       Weighing bottle

·       Weighing box

·       Chemical balance

Reagent Preparation

·       1.575 g of oxalic acid weighed and dissolved in distilled water in a 250 mL flask.

Procedure

1.    Preparation of Flask

·       Thoroughly wash the 250 mL flask.

·       Dry the flask in an oven and weigh it to ensure accuracy.

2.    Weighing Oxalic Acid

·       Using the dry flask, measure 1.575 g of oxalic acid accurately using a chemical balance.

3.    Preparation of Solution

·       Add the weighed oxalic acid to the flask.

·       Add distilled water gradually until the total volume reaches 250 mL.

·       Swirl the flask to dissolve the oxalic acid thoroughly, creating a homogeneous 0.05 M solution.

4.    Final Observation

·       The resulting solution should be clear, with oxalic acid fully dissolved in 250 mL of water.

Observations

·       Mass of Oxalic Acid: 1.575 g

·       Volume of Solution: 250 mL of clear oxalic acid solution
